Merwestaal contributes to the renovation of the Rijnhavenbrug Alphen aan den Rijn

July 2017

The fact that our steel is used for all kinds of applications in The Netherlands and many other countries is a big compliment to us. Over the years we have contributed to many special projects, and we can again add a nice project: the renovation of the Rijnhavenbrug in Alphen aan den Rijn!

Merwestaal has used plates up to 200mm thick in the quality S355J2 + N and S355J2C + N (special set quality). As a supplementary requirement and wish from the client we have applied a large amount of bevel and some plates are tested Z35 to ensure high quality. For cutting the plates for this bridge, we have used our plasma (up to 20mm) and autogenous cutting process (up to 300mm). The entire project is delivered under the NEN1090-2 Execution Class 3.

Renovation of the Rijnhaven bridge began in January 2017. The municipality of Alphen aan den Rijn has demolished the old bridge because it was very low and not remotely operated. A new, higher bridge will ensure a lively Rijnhaven area. After the renovation, the Rijnhaven bridge will have a free passage height of 2.45 meters. In addition, the bridge will also be remotely operable. It makes it easy for ships to enter the port. Small motorboats and sloops can pass through without any effort.
